STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP

Why technology strategy needs commercial accountability

A technology roadmap is only useful when it connects investment, delivery and measurable business outcomes.

The gap between ambition and accountability

Technology strategies can become collections of attractive initiatives: modernise the platform, adopt cloud, strengthen security, introduce automation. Each may be worthwhile, but none is a strategy until it is linked to a business outcome and a realistic commitment of resources.

Start with decisions, not products

Before selecting a platform, establish what the organisation needs to achieve, what it can afford to operate and which risks it is willing to accept. The architecture should follow those choices. A technically elegant solution that cannot be funded or supported is not a successful outcome.

Build the economics into the roadmap

Consider the full lifecycle: licensing, skills, migration, support, resilience, contract flexibility and the cost of change. Where possible, give each initiative an accountable owner, a measurable outcome and an explicit trade-off.

What good governance looks like

Review progress against business value, not simply milestone completion. Ask whether the original assumptions still hold and whether the next pound of investment is going to the right place. Good governance makes it easier to change direction before sunk costs dictate the answer.
